Union College’s Mary Carroll to Serve as President of the American Chemical Society

Mary K. Carroll, the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry at Union College in Schenectady, New York, has been named president-elect of the American Chemical Society. Professor Carroll will serve as president of the society in 2024 and immediate past president in 2025. She will also serve on the board of directors from 2023 through 2025. The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society with 151,000 members in 140 countries.

Dr. Carroll, an analytical chemist, joined Union College in 1992, the first alumna hired as a tenure-track member of the college’s faculty. She co-directs the college’s Aerogel Lab, a cross-disciplinary group of students and faculty in chemistry, mechanical engineering, and other STEM fields. The lab investigates catalytic aerogels for automotive pollution mitigation and the use of aerogels for sustainable building applications.

“I feel honored and really pleased,” Dr. Carroll said. “I look forward to promoting ACS activities that are going to yield maximum results for the members and for society at large. And I’m also eager to have the opportunity to work with other ACS member volunteers from all different levels. At this difficult time, it is critically important that scientists contribute to society as a whole via research, education, advocacy, and outreach activities,”

Professor Carroll earned a bachelor’s degree at Union College and a Ph.D. at Indiana University, Bloomington.
