Academic Study Finds That Woman Are Often Overlooked as Potential Donors by Religious Groups

A study conducted by the Center on Faith in Communities at the Sagamore Institute in Indianapolis and analyzed by the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University finds that many churches overlook women as potential major donors. The study found that women now control more than 51 percent of personal wealth and that 40 percent of working wives now earn more than their husbands.
A survey of more than 7,400 women in different Christian denominations found that many women are not approached about charitable giving despite the fact that many of these women would be more than happy to contribute more to religious organizations.
The study was authored by Amy L. Sherman, a senior fellow at the Sagamore Institute and the Institute for Studies of Religion. Dr. Sherman is a graduate of Messiah College. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
