Three Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Provost Positions

Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa has named Heidi Manning as its new provost and vice president for academic affairs. The private university was founded in 1891 and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Women make up 63 percent of the 1,500-member undergraduate student body.

For the past five years, Dr. Manning has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of physics at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania. Earlier, she was an administrator and faculty member for 20 years at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. There, she served as chair of the Division of Science and Mathematics. She has been a visiting associate research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Dr. Manning is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where she majored in physics. She holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota.

Patricia Price was appointed interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Queens College, a campus of the City University of New York. The college enrolls nearly 16,000 undergraduate students, according to the most recent federal statistics. Women make up 54 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Since 2017, Dr. Price has served as associate provost and assistant vice president for academic administration, faculty development, and research at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Earlier, she was dean of academic affairs at Guttman Community College in New York City and served for 19 years on the geography faculty at Florida International University.

Dr. Price holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and master’s and doctoral degrees in geography, all from the University of Washington.

Barbara J. Johnson is the new executive vice president and provost at Talladega College in Alabama. Dr. Johnson will also hold the rank of a tenured professor.

Dr. Johnson had been serving as vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. Earlier, Dr. Johnson served as vice president for accreditation relations for the Higher Learning Commission, one of six regional institutional accreditors. Previously, Dr. Johnson was a senior vice president and tenured professor at Meharry Medical College, a department chair and tenured professor at Northern Illinois University, and also taught full-time at the University of New Orleans and Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University n North Carolina, where she majored in accounting. She holds an MBA from Ohio State University and a holds a Ph.D. in education and human development from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
