Laura Carlson Will Be the Next Provost at the University of Delaware

Laura Carlson, vice president, associate provost, and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Notre Dame, has been named the twelfth provost at the University of Delaware. She will take on her new duties on June 8.

A professor of psychology, Carlson was appointed head administrator of Notre Dame’s Graduate School in 2013. As dean, she led the establishment of the Office of Grants and Fellowships, which assists graduate students in securing $4 million to $6 million annually in nationally competitive awards to support their scholarly endeavors.

Prior to her appointment as vice president, associate provost, and dean of the Graduate School, Carlson served as associate dean of professional development at the Graduate School, associate chair of the department of psychology, and director of graduate studies for the department of psychology. Dr. Carlson joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1994 as an assistant professor of psychology.

“Notre Dame has transformed me — as a scholar, as a teacher, as a leader, as a person. I am forever indebted to the countless colleagues who have offered counsel, support, and friendship over the years. I will leave a piece of my heart at Notre Dame and, in its space, will carry a piece of it with me forevermore,” Dr. Carlson said.

Dr. Carlson is a graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She earned a master’s degree at Michigan State University and a doctorate from the University of Illinois.
