In Memoriam: Hannah Rose Arterian, 1949-2022

Hannah R. Arterian, dean emerita of Syracuse University’s College of Law, died on April 8 in Los Angeles. She was 72 years old.

A native of New York City, Professor Arterian was a magna cum laude graduate of Elmira College in New York, where she majored in English literature. She went on to earn a juris doctorate at the University of Iowa College of Law, where she was the first woman to hold an editorial position on the Iowa Law Review.

She practiced corporate tax law for the law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood in New York City, before embarking on a remarkable career in legal academia. After teaching at the University of Iowa, Professor Arterian joined the faculty in the College of Law at Arizona State University. She taught there for 20 years and was the first women to serve as associate dean. In 2002, Professor Arterian was named dean of Syracuse’s College of Law, a position she held for 13 years.

“Our College of Law community mourns the loss of Dean Emerita Hannah Arterian,” said Craig Boise, current dean of the College of Law. “Her leadership and influence, her impact on the lives of countless alumni, faculty and staff, and her many accomplishments as dean will always be a part of our story.”
