Five Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Professorships

Stephanie Yuhl was appointed the W. Arthur Garrity, Sr. Professor in Human Nature, Ethics and Society at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. She joined the faculty at the college in 2000. Dr. Yuhl is the author of the award-winning book A Golden Haze of Memory: The Making of Historic Charleston (University of North Carolina Press, 2005).

A native of Santa Monica, California, Professor Yuhl is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, and holds a Ph.D. from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Josephine McDonagh has been named the George M. Pullman Professor in the department of English language and literature at the University of Chicago. Her research is focused on 19th-century British literature, colonialism, and the politics of literary expression. Professor McDonagh latest book is Literature in a Time of Migration: British Fiction and the Movement of People 1815–1876 (Oxford University Press, 2021).

Professor McDonagh holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southampton in England.

Maureen Long, an expert on the structure and dynamics of the deep Earth, has been appointed the Bruce D. Alexander ’65 Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University. Dr. Long is an observational seismologist who works on problems related to mantle dynamics, with a focus on subduction zone processes, the structure and evolution of the continental lithosphere, and the dynamics of the deep mantle. She joined the faculty at Yale in 2009.

Professor Long is a summa cum laude graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where she majored in geology. She holds a Ph.D. in geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Catherine Juillard, who studies ways to improve surgical care in underresourced countries, has been named the inaugural Marjorie Fine, M.D., Professor of Clinical General Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. She serves as co-director of the Program for the Advancement of Surgical Equity at the university. Professor Julliard joined the faculty at UCLA in 2018.

Dr. Julliard holds a bachelor’s degree and a medical doctorate from the University of California Los Angeles. She also earned a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Elizabeth Krause was named to the Terrence Murray Commonwealth Honors College Professorship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Krause joined the faculty in the department of anthropology at the university in 2000 and was promoted to full professor in 2012.

Dr. Krause is a graduate of the University of Missouri, where she majored in journalism. She holds a master’s degree in applied anthropology from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona.
