Six Women Scholars Who Are Taking on New Assignments at Major Universities

Kelsey Slater is a new assistant professor of sports management at North Dakota State University in Fargo. She recently completed an internship with the Sports Diplomacy Division at the U.S. Department of State. Her research is focused on sport communication and sport for development.

Dr. Slater is a graduate of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where she majored in environmental studies and was a two-sport athlete in volleyball and track and field. She holds a master’s degree in sports administration and a Ph.D. in kinesiology with a concentration in sports studies from Mississippi State University.

Cynthia Russell, a professor in the department of acute and tertiary care in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, was given the added duties as vice chancellor for academic, faculty and student affairs. She has served as interim vice chancellor since December 2020 and has been on the faculty since 1993.

Dr. Russell earned a bachelor’s degree at Ohio University. She holds a master’s degree in nursing from West Virginia University and a Ph.D. in nursing science from the University of Arizona.

Kalenda Eaton, an associate professor of African American studies at the University of Oklahoma has been named director of Oklahoma research for the Black Homesteader Project of the National Park Service. Dr. Eaton will lead a team of researchers, students, and members of an advisory board focused solely on Oklahoma. She will guide data collection, archival and interpretive research, publications, digital scholarship, and community affairs.

Dr. Eaton is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans. She holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.

Lesley Reed, professor and chair of the department of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Alabama, has been assigned the duties of associate provost for faculty affairs. Earlier in her career, she served on faculty at Georgia State University from 2000 to 2014.

Dr. Reed is a graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Geraldine McGinty, chief strategy officer and chief contracting officer of the Weill Cornell Medicine Physician Organization and an associate professor of clinical radiology at the Cornell medical school, was named senior associate dean for clinical affairs.

Dr. McGinty received her medical degree in 1988 from the National University of Ireland, Galway. She holds an MBA from Columbia University.

Alice Steimle, an instructional assistant professor of teacher education, was promoted to director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education at the University of Mississippi. She has been serving as the associate director of the center.

Dr. Steimle is a graduate of Mississippi College. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Mississippi.
