Two Women Named to Endowed Chairs at Duke University

Duke University has announced the appointment of nine faculty members to endowed chairs in its Bass Program for Excellence in Undergraduate Education. Bass Fellows hold their endowed chairs for five years and become permanent members of the Bass Society of Fellows.

Two of the nine appointees are women.

Esther Garbara was named the E. Blake Byrne Associate Professor of Romance Studies. She is the author of Errant Modernism: The Ethos of Photography in Mexico and Brazil (Duke University Press, 2008).

Dr. Garbara is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Stanford University.

Judith G. Kelley was named the Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor of Public Policy. She holds appointments in the department of political science and at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy. She is the author of Monitoring Democracy: When International Election Observation Works and Why it Often Fails (Princeton University Press, 2012).

Dr. Kelley is a graduate of Stanford University and holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University.
