Two Women Who Are Retiring From High-Level University Positions

Dina López, professor of geological sciences at Ohio University has retired and been granted emerita status. Dr. López is an internationally renowned researcher in environmental geochemistry and geochemistry of hydrothermal systems. Much of her research career has been spent focused on environmental issues (and related human health problems) in Latin America and Ohio, particularly on understanding impacts and mitigation strategies of acid mine drainage in Southeastern Ohio.

Dr. López served on the faculty at Ohio University for more than a quarter century. She is a graduate of the Universidad de El Salvador, where she majored in chemistry. Dr. López earned a master’s degree in physics at Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in geology from Louisiana State University.

Judith Cone, vice chancellor for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will retire in April. She has served on the staff at the university for 12 years. In addition to her other duties, Cone was interim director of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at Kenan-Flagler Business School from late 2013 through early 2015. Before joining the staff at the university, Cone served as vice president of emerging strategies and entrepreneurship at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City.

Cone holds a master’s degree in education and psychology from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, and a second master’s degree in business from the University of Kansas.
