Six Women Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Chairs at Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire has announced the appointment of 11 faculty members to endowed professorships. Six of the appointments went to women scholars.

Colleen Boggs was named to the Parents Distinguished Research Professorship in the Humanities. A scholar of nineteenth-century American literature, she has particular expertise in the literatures of the American Civil War, animal studies, transatlantic studies, literary theory, and gender studies. Her latest book is Patriotism By Proxy: The Civil War Draft and the Cultural Formation of Citizen-Soldiers, 1863-1865 (Oxford University Press, 2020). Professor Boggs is a graduate of Yale University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Stacie Deiner was appointed to the William LeRoy Garth Professorship in Anesthesiology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. Before joining the Dartmouth faculty in May 2020, Dr. Deiner was a professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, neurosurgery, and geriatrics and palliative medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Dr. Deiner’s research focuses on cognitive and functional recovery in geriatric surgical patients. Dr. Deiner earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a medical doctorate at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Elizabeth Murname is the Charles H. Gaut and Charles A. Norberg Assistant Professor of Engineering. She focuses on interdisciplinary research to engineer technologies to develop intelligent and interactive tools for sensing and intervention, with a focus on societally impactful applications in education, health, and sustainability. Dr. Murname is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned a Ph.D. in information science at Cornell University.

Claudia Olivetti was appointed to the George J. Records 1956 Professorship in Economics. Her research focuses on understanding the causes and consequences of the evolving economic role of women in the U.S. and across developed economies, and the tradeoffs faced by families. Dr. Olivetti joined the faculty at Dartmouth College in 2019 after serving on the faculty at Boston College. Dr. Olivetti is a graduate of the University of Rome. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Lorenza Viola is the James Frank Family Professor of Physics and Astronomy. She is a theoretical physicist specializing in quantum information science. Dr. Viola joined the Dartmouth College faculty as an associate professor in 2004. Professor Viola holds a master’s degree in physics from the University of Trento in Italy She earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Padua in Italy and went on to be a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Thalia Wheatley was appointed the Lincoln Filene Professor of Human Relations. She also serves as the director of the Center for Social Brain Sciences. Her research addresses why social interaction is critical for physical and mental health, and how it aligns our brains in ways that facilitate mutual understanding. Professor Wheatly joined the faculty at Dartmouth in 2006, was promoted to associate professor in 2013 and full professor in 2019. Professor Wheatley is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Virginia.
