Northwestern University Appoints Kathleen Hagerty as Its First Woman Provost

Kathleen Hagerty was appointed provost at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. When she takes office on September 1, she will be the first woman to hold the post since the university was founded in 1851.

Dr. Hagerty has been serving as an interim provost since April. Earlier, she was interim dean of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern and senior associate dean of faculty and research. Dr. Hagerty has been on the faculty at the university for more than 30 years.

Dr. Hagerty holds the First Chicago Professorship in Finance. Her research has focused on the micro-structure of securities markets, disclosure regulation, insider trading regulation, and the effectiveness of self-regulatory organizations.

“I am pleased and excited to have the opportunity to work with the Northwestern community in continuing to move the University forward during these challenging times,” Professor Hagerty said. “The current situation also provides us with opportunities, and I look forward to working with the deans, faculty, staff, and students at Northwestern to continue to enhance our impact on local, national, and international issues. My goal, and the goal of all of us at Northwestern, is to make our university an even greater institution, accelerating our impact on society through path-breaking research and an innovative and transformational academic experience.”

Dr. Hagerty holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, an MBA, and a master’s degree in operations research, all from the University of California, Berkeley. She earned a Ph.D. in economics at Stanford University.
