Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Marquette University in Milwaukee received a $1.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for a neuroscientific study on substance use disorder in women. The project, titled “Estrogen regulation of the prefrontal cortex and drug seeking,” aims to identify the role biological sex – specifically the hormone estrogen – plays in disordered substance use and relapse.

Meharry Medical College in Nashville received a $1.4 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. The grant will fund a study of motivational treatment strategies for African-American women with Type 2 diabetes living in the Southeastern United States. The program is under the direction of Stephania T. Miller-Hughes, an associate professor in the Meharry School of Medicine department of surgery.

Rutgers University in New Jersey is using a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to launch a new program centered around helping minority- and women-owned businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, received a grant from The Dr. Rustom and Mary Khouri Foundation to help launch the College’s Institute for Women, Wellness & Work, a new initiative offering credit- and non-credit-bearing programs. The Institute is offering new academic programs this fall in the three broad categories of women’s leadership, integrative health & wellness, and workforce development.
