In Memoriam: Hilda Carey, 1928-2019

Hilda Carey, who had a career in education spanning for more than half a century including teaching at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, died late last month at an assisted living facility operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, New York. She was 91 years old.

Sister Carey was a native of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was a student in the first class to graduate from Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Newton, Massachusetts, where she received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1950. She later earned a master’s degree in English from Manhattanville College, in Purchase, New York.

Sister Cary joined the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1952 and took her final vows in 1960 in Rome. Early in her teaching career, Sister Carey taught English and served as mistress of studies at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Kenwood in Albany, New York, and the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City.

Beginning in 1972, she served as a professor of English at the Sacred Heart College for Women in Korea. Returning to the United States, Sister Carey taught high school English and theology at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey, and later at Newton Country Day School in Newton, Massachusetts.

In 1986, Sister Carey began teaching freshman English at Boston College, and continued to do so well into her 80s.
