Simmons University Scholar Wins Award for Her Work on War as a Public Health Problem

Shelley K. White an associate professor of public health and sociology and the director of the master of public health degree program at Simmons University in Boston, has been selected to receive the Victor Sidel and Barry Levy Award for Peace from the American Public Health Association. Dr. White will be honored on November 5 at the association’s 2019 Annual Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia.

Dr. White is being honored for her contributions in identifying war as a public health problem and her innovative MPH curriculum on health equity that includes a focus on militarism and war, among other work. The award was endowed by two past presidents of APHA, Victor W. Sidel and Barry S. Levy, who have edited books, written papers and spoken widely on war and public health.

Dr. White is a graduate of Boston University, where she majored in occupational therapy. She earned a master of public health degree at Boston University and a Ph.D. in sociology at Boston College.
