Five Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Positions as Dean

Shanna L. Howell has been named dean of the Bristol Community College New Bedford Campus in Massachusetts. She most recently served as director of student success at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dr. Howell is a graduate of the University of West Georgia where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree in adult learning and organizational performance from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies/community college leadership from Iowa State University.

Wanda C. Gonsalves was appointed interim dean of the College of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences at Kentucky State University. She was a professor and vice chair of the department of family and consumer medicine at the University of Kentucky. She held those positions since 2013.

Dr. Gonsalves is a graduate of the University of Louisville. She earned her medical degree at the University of Kentucky.

Barbara Lee Bass has been named the vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University. When she begins her new duties in January, she will be the first woman to lead the medical school. Currently, Dr. Bass is the chair of the department of surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas where she has served in research, clinical, and academic leadership positions since 2005.

Dr. Bass holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University in Massachusetts and graduated from the medical school at the University of Virginia. She completed her general surgery residency at George Washington University.

Janelle Chiasera has been appointed to the position of dean of the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Dr. Chiasera has been serving as senior executive associate dean for the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She was also chair of the department of clinical and diagnostic sciences and was program director of the clinical laboratory science program.

Dr. Chiasera holds a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in allied health education and a Ph.D. in quantitative research, education and measurement from Ohio State University.

Annette B. Wysocki is the new dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing In New York. A nursing educator, scholar and researcher for more than 30 years, Dr. Wysocki came to Stony Brook from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst College of Nursing, where she served as professor and associate dean for research since 2012.

Dr. Wysocki received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin.
