Cynthia Owsley Honored for Her 30-Year Career in Vision Impairment Research

Cynthia Owsley, who holds the Nathan E. Miles Chair of Ophthalmology and is the director of the Clinical Research Unit of the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been selected to receive the 2019 Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health from Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization.

The award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of public health related to vision and eye health at the community, state, national, or international level. Dr. Owsley will receive the award and give an address at the Focus on Eye Health National Summit in Washington on July 17.

Dr. Owsley has had a 30-year career conducting research on vision impairment and eye disease and aging. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She holds a master of public health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
