Susan Nutter, former vice provost and director of the North Carolina State University Libraries, passed away on March 25, 2019. She was 74 years old.
Nutter led the North Carolina State University Libraries from 1987 to 2017. During her tenure, she built world-class research collections and established the online library. She expand the libraries from 1.5 million volumes in 1990 to 5.2 million volumes in 2017. She also recruited talented staff to the University Libraries and oversaw the construction of spaces for learning, collaboration, and discovery, including the James B. Hunt Jr. Library.
Earlier in her career, Nutter was associate director of the Barker Engineering Library at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Council on Library Resources academic library management intern at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nutter was active in the Association of Research Libraries, serving as president from 1992 to 1993, and on the board of directors from 1989 to 1994.
Nutter was a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she majored in American literature. She held a master of library science degree from Simmons University in Boston.
