Boise State University in Idaho has announced a field of five finalists to become the seventh president of the educational institution.The university enrolls nearly 21,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,300 graduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 56 percent of the undergraduate student body.
The five finalists were selected from 60 applicants. That field was trimmed down to 12 semifinalists. All five candidates will be visiting campus shortly for a series of interviews and public forums. Two of the five candidates are women.
Susan E. Borrego is currently chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint. She has held that post since August 2014. She also serves as a professor in the university’s School of Education and Human Services. Before coming to the University of Michigan-Flint, Dr. Borrego was vice president for enrollment management, planning and student affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, California. Earlier in her career, Dr. Borrego held administrative posts at California State University, Monterey Bay, the University of Arkansas, and the California Institute of technology. Professor Borrego is a graduate of Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, where she majored in speech and communications. She earned a master’s degree in college student affairs at Azuza Pacific University in California, and a Ph.D. in education from the Claremont Graduate University in California.
Marlene Tromp is provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She also serves as a professor of literature and critical race and ethnicity studies. Before coming to the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2017, Dr. Tromp was dean of the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and vice provost at Arizona State University. Earlier in her career, Professor Tromp was chair and director of the women’s studies program at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she served on the faculty for 14 years. She is the former president of the North American Victorian Studies Association. Dr. Tromp is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Wyoming and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Professor Tromp is the author, co-author, or editor of several books including Altered States: Sex, Nation, Drugs, and Self-Transformation in Victorian Spiritualism (State University of New York Press, 2006) and The Private Rod: Marital Violence, Sensation, and the Law in Victorian Britain (University of Virginia Press, 2000).
