New Administrative Positions for 10 Women in American Higher Education

Cheryl Canfield has been named finance officer for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas. She was chief fiscal officer for the university’s Office of Business Affairs.

Canfield holds a bachelor’s degree in landscape design and urban horticulture and a second bachelor’s degree in accounting and computer information systems both from the University of Arkansas.

Marguerite Joutz has been named chief of staff and assistant to the president at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Most recently, she served as assistant to the editorial page editor at The New York Times.

Joutz holds a bachelor’s degree in education studies in history and policy from Brown University.

Cynthia B. Malinick has been named director and chief curator for the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University in Alabama. She most recently served as vice president for cultural assets for the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Malinick holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and a master’s degree in history from the University of San Diego.

Elly Brenner has been named assistant provost for academic advising at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. She currently serves as assistant dean for records and registration for the university’s first year of studies.

Brenner is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree in public policy and administration and a master of social work degree with a clinical concentration both from Ohio State University.

Sherry Turner has been named vice president of strategic initiatives at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the director of institutional success and support for the United Negro College Fund.

Dr. Turner holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, anthropology, and sociology from Rhodes College, a master’s degree in applied developmental and educational psychology from North Carolina State University, a master of theological studies in feminist and womanist thought from Emory University in Atlanta, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Illinois.

Katherine Greenwood has been named university ombudsperson at the University Park Campus of the University of Southern California. She was the director of the Office of the Ombuds at the University of California, Davis.

Dr. Greenwoods holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a law degree both from Tulane University in New Orleans as well as a Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California.

MaryKathyrine Tran has been named assistant director of the Women’s Center at Ohio University. She previously served as Titan Femtorship and LeadHERship Coordinator at the Women’s Center at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Tran holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s and gender studies and English with a minor in music and a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy.

Laura K.J. Farr has been named director of state and local relations at the Government Relations office at Northwestern University. She was a state legislative affairs manager for the Chicago Public Schools.

Farr holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Loyola University Chicago.

Jessica Levin Martinez has been named director of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She currently serves as head of the Division of Academic and Public Programs at the Harvard Art Museums.

Dr. Martinez holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a doctorate in the history of art and architecture from Harvard University.

Doneka Scott has been named vice provost of undergraduate education and student success at the University of Oregon. She has been serving as the associate vice provost of student success and the associate dean for undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon for the past three years.

Dr. Scott holds a master’s degree in higher and postsecondary education and a doctorate in pharmacy both from the University of Michigan.
