National Science Foundation’s Joan Ferrini-Mundy to Lead the University of Maine

On July 1, Joan Ferrini-Mundy will become president of the University of Maine and president of the University of Maine at Machias. She is the chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation.
The flagship campus of the University of Maine at Orono enrolls more than 9,000 undergraduate students and nearly, 2,000 graduate students. Women are 47 percent of the undergraduate student body. The Machias campus enrolls more than 700 undergraduate students. Women are 69 percent of the students at this campus, which is located in eastern Maine by the border with the Canadian province of New Brunswick.
Before joining the National Science Foundation in 2007, Dr. Ferrini-Mundy was a professor of mathematics and teacher education for 12 years at Michigan State University. There, she also served as associate dean for science and mathematics education in the College of Natural Science. Earlier in her career, Dr. Ferrini-Mundy was a professor of mathematics and director of the master’s degree program in teaching at the University of New Hampshire.
Dr. Ferrini-Mundy holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education, a master’s degree in mathematics, and a Ph.D. in mathematics education, all from the University of New Hampshire.
