Three Women Who Are Stepping Down From High-Level Posts in Academia

Retha M. Warnicke, a professor of history at Arizona State University, retired on January 1 after teaching at the university for nearly a half century. In 1969, Dr. Warnicke was the first women hired to the history department at Arizona State. She was promoted to full professor in 1984. Professor Warnicke chaired the history department from 1992 to 1998.
Professor Warnicke, now 78 years old, is a magna cum laude graduate of Indiana University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her most recent book is Elizabeth of York and Her Six Daughters-in-Law: Fashioning Tudor Queenship, 1485–1547 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017).
Jackie Hartman, chief of staff to the president at Kansas State University, is retiring on February 1. She was appointed director of community relations and assistant to the president in 2010. Before joining the staff at Kansas State, Dr. Hartman served on the faculty at Colorado State University for 23 years.
Dr. Hartman holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas State University. She earned a Ph.D. in human resource development at Colorado State University.
Martha Beattie, vice president of alumni relations for Dartmouth College, is retiring. She held the post for the past six years. Earlier, she was a mathematics teacher.
Beattie is a 1976 graduate of Dartmouth College. She was a member of the first class of women students who completed four years of undergraduate study at the college.
