A Half Dozen Women Who Have Been Selected for New Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Tami B. Simmons was named vice president of institutional advancement at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has been serving as director of the Charlotte chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Simmons is a graduate of Hampton University in Virginia. She holds a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham.

Sara Thorndike was promoted to senior associate vice chancellor for business affairs and chief financial officer at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She has been serving as associate vice chancellor for finance and controller at the university.

Thorndike joined the staff at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2014.

Ann Penn is the new deputy director of the department of human resources at North Carolina Central University. Since February 2016, she has served as interim director of EEO compliance and employee relations at the university.

Penn is a graduate of Myers University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she majored in business administration. She holds a master’s degree in psychology from Cleveland State University.

Sherryta Freeman was named director of athletics at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. She has been serving as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at the University of Pennsylvania. Earlier, she was senior associate athletics director at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Freeman is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where she majored in environmental studies and was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball. She holds a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts.

Tracy Wahl was named director of the Regional Journalism Collaboration for Sustainability, a group of public television and radio stations in three western states. The lead station in the group is operated by Arizona State University.

Wahl has been serving as executive producer of editorial franchises at National Public Radio. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado and holds a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Darrice Griffin has been named deputy director of administration at the University of Georgia Athletic Association. This past summer she was named the deputy director of athletics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She joined the staff at the University of Massachusetts in 2015. Earlier, Griffin was associate athletics director for intercollegiate sports programs at Columbia University in New York City.

Griffin is a graduate of Texas Tech University, where she majored in psychology and played varsity basketball.

Ayanna Howard Appointed the Twelfth President of Spelman College in Atlanta

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
