Four Women Join the Faculty of the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT

The School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has announced the appointment of five new faculty members. Four of the new hires are women.

Judith Barry was appointed professor of art, culture, and technology in the department of architecture. She is an internationally recognized artist whose exhibits incorporate architecture, sculpture, performance, theater, film/video, new media, graphics and interactivity. Barry is a graduate of the University of Florida. She holds a master’s degree in communications arts from the New York Institute of Technology.

Mariana Ibanez is a new assistant professor of architecture. She previously taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University and the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She is a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires and holds a master’s degree in architecture and urbanism from the Architectural Association in London, England.

Erica James has been appointed associate professor of medical anthropology and urban studies with tenure in the department of urban studies and planning. She has been on the faculty at MIT since 2004 in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. She is the author of Democratic Insecurities: Violence, Trauma, and Intervention in Haiti (University of California Press, 2010). Dr. James is a graduate of Princeton University, where she majored in anthropology. She holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in social anthropology from Harvard University.

Danielle Wood was named an assistant professor in the program of media arts and sciences. She will begin teaching at MIT in January. Dr. Wood has worked as the applied sciences manager within the Earth Science Division of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Dr. Wood holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, two master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. in engineering systems, all from MIT.
