Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, received a two-year, $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to produce and test a new device that potentially can help identify risk factors that cause breast cancer. Sophie Lelievre, a professor of cancer pharmacology at Purdue University, is a co-leader of the project.
Washington University in St. Louis received a five-year, $3.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to test the effectiveness of intervention programs to educate adolescent girls in Uganda about HIV risk factors. Some 70 percent of all new HIV infections in the 15-to-19 age group in Uganda are young women.
The University of Virginia received a $15 million gift from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation to establish the A. James Clark Scholars Program in the university’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The scholars program will provide financial aid to students who are underrepresented in the engineering field, including women.
