In Memoriam: Margaret Catherine Berry, 1915-2017

Margaret Berry, a former administrator and historian of the University of Texas at Austin, died on April 9. She was 101 years old.

A native of Dawson, Texas. Dr. Berry earned a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Texas at Austin in 1937. She went on to receive a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history at Columbia University in New York City.

Dr. Berry’s first job in academia was as a history instructor at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, Texas. In 1950, she was named dean and professor of history at East Texas State University, which is now Texas A&M University-Commerce. In 1962, Dr. Berry was named associate dean of women at the University of Texas at Austin and served in several administrative roles there over the next 18 years. After retiring in 1980, she continued to be involved in university affairs and taught a freshman seminar on the university’s history.

Dr. Berry was the author of several books on the history of the University of Texas including The University of Texas: A Pictorial Account of Its First Century (University of Texas Press, 1980).
