Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Jackson State University in Mississippi received a $300,000 grant from the NoVo Foundation to support the Lighthouse project at the university’s Margaret Walker Center. The foundation was created by a gift from businessman Warren Buffet. The Lighthouse project, directed by Natalie Collier, provides a safe space for Black girls and young women to address their personal, social, and leadership development needs.

Mills College, the liberal arts educational institution for women in Oakland, California, received a $199,874 grant from the Joseph and Vera Long Foundation to develop a new computational literacy curriculum. The curriculum will train Mills College students to analyze, comprehend, and manage data across the liberal arts disciplines. Elizabeth L. Hillman, president of Mills College, explained that “the development of this curriculum supports and empowers our students to gain the technology skills they need to be leaders in their chosen area of study and beyond.”
