Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
The University of New Hampshire received a $1.8 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research that will lead to the creation of an educational plan for middle and high school students with the goal of reducing sexual violence. Researchers will conduct six surveys of middle and high schools students over the course of three years.
Mount Holyoke College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in South Hadley, Massachusetts, received a five-year, $900,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that will be used to formulate new search practices that will enable the college to identify and hire faculty members who will “enrich the diversity and enhance the academic integrity of the Mount Holyoke Community.” Jon Western, Mount Holyoke’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, stated that “we want to think about alternative ways of conceptualizing our fields of inquiry. If we ask broader and more diverse questions, we will find exceptional scholars who can approach the curriculum in new ways — and this will give all of us more insights into an increasingly complex and dynamic world. We all benefit from this.”
