The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has announced the hiring of eight new faculty members. Three of the eight new hires are women.
Claire Conceison is the Quanta Professor of Chinese Culture and professor of theater arts. She is the co-author of Voices Carry: Behind Bars and Backstage During China’s Revolution and Reform (Rowman and Littlefield, 2009). Professor Conceison holds a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in theatre studies from Cornell University.
Tamar Schapiro is a new associate professor of philosophy. She had served on the faculty at Stanford University. Dr. Schapiro is currently working on a book with the tentative title of Inclination and Will: A Kantian Conception of Passion and Its Role in Action. She is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University.
Ariel White is a new assistant professor of political science. She was serving as a doctoral fellow in the multidisciplinary program in inequality and social policy at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. White is a 2009 graduate of Cornell University. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in government at Harvard University. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled, “Voter Behavior in the Wake of Punitive Politics.”
