The New President of the International Primatological Society

Karen Strier, the new president of the International Primatological SocietyKaren Strier, the Irven DeVore Professor of Anthropology and the Vilas Research Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is the new president of the International Primatological Society. The society was founded 52 years ago to “encourage all areas of non-human primatological scientific research, to facilitate cooperation among scientists of all nationalities engaged in primate research, and to promote the conservation of all primate species.”

Professor Strier joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and was promoted to full professor in 1995. Earlier in her career, she taught at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. Dr. Strier is the author of the textbook Primate Behavioral Ecology (Routledge, 2016), now in its fifth edition.

Since 1982, Professor Strier has been conducting research on the northern muriqui monkey in Brazil. It is one of the world’s most critically endangered primates.

Dr. Strier is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University.
