Sandra J. Carlson, professor of paleobiology in the department of Earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Davis, has been selected as the recipient of the 2016 Encourage Award from the Association for Women Geoscientists. The award is one of three given by the association to individuals who have advanced the participation of women in the geosciences.
Professor Carlson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Patricia Davidson, dean of the School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, received the 2016 Eureka Prize for Outstanding Mentor of Young Researchers from the Australian Museum. She is the first nurse to win the award. The museum noted that Dr. Davidson “creates an inclusive and safe learning environment for researchers to develop as scholars, and has continued to mentor and work collaboratively with many of her students once they have established their own research careers.”
Dr. Davidson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wollongong in Australia. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Newcastle in Australia.
Mary Osirim, provost and professor of sociology at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, has received the 2017 Distinguished Feminist Lecturer Award from Sociologists for Women in Society. Professor Osirim is the author of Women in Urban Zimbabwe: Gender, Microbusiness and Globalization (Indiana University Press, 2009).
Dr. Osirim has taught a Bryn Mawr College since 1986. She holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University. She also earned a master’s degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Dr. Dotson spent six years as president of Yuba College in California. Earlier, she served eight years as a senior administrator with Clover Park Technical College in Washington.
Dr. Shah is the Ursula Geller Distinguished Professor of Research in Cardiovascular Diseases and associate dean for translational research at the Duke University School of Medicine. She will serve as president-elect of the American Heart Association in 2026–2027, followed by a one-year term as president in 2027–2028.
Dr. Batten will become interim president of Horry-Georgetown Technical College on August 1. She most recently served as the two-year college's vice president for student affairs.
Dr. Kahanov became the twentieth president of Notre Dame de Namur University in California on July 1. She previously served as provost at Alvernia University in Pennsylvania, Stockton University in New Jersey, and SUNY Oneonta.
Most recently, Dr. Sanders served as vice president of experiential product management and interim vice president of product and technology at Western Governors University.
