Akiko Iwasaki was named the Waldemar Von Zedwitz Professor of Immunobiology and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Professor Iwasaki’s research focuses on the mechanisms of immune defense against viruses. She joined the faculty at Yale in 2000.
Dr. Iwasaki holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Toronto. She did postdoctoral research at the National Institutes of Health.
Gretchen Campbell, an adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland, was appointed the co-director of the Joint Quantum Institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. She has been with the institute since 2009.
Dr. Campbell is a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she majored in physics. She holds a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Beth Rodgers was named a professor and chair of the department of adult health and nursing systems in the School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She was a professor at the University of New Mexico School of Nursing.
Dr. Rodgers is a graduate of Georgia State University in Atlanta. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.
Gwendolyn Sowa was appointed chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She holds joint faculty appointments in School of Medicine and the department of bioengineering at the university’s Swanson School of Engineering.
Dr. Sowa holds a medical degree and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Casey Malone Maugh Funderburk, an assistant professor of communication studies at the Gulf Park campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, was named associate provost. Dr. Maugh Funderburk joined the faculty at the university in 2008.
Dr. Maugh Funderburk is a graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, where she majored in communication studies. She holds a master’s degree in speech communication from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in communication arts and sciences from Pennsylvania State University.
Annise Parker was named a professor of practice at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The former mayor of Houston has just completed a semester as a fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Parker is a 1978 graduate of Rice University, where she majored in anthropology, psychology, and sociology.
Katy Harriger, a professor and chair of the department of politics and international affairs at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has been given the additional responsibility as director of the Wake Washington program that offers students academic and internship experiences in the nation’s capital.
Dr. Harriger is a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.
