Denise Von Glahn, professor of musicology and director of the Center for Music of the Americas at Florida State University in Tallahassee, is the recipient of the Pauline Alderman Award from the International Alliance for Women in Music. Professor Von Glahn was honored for her book Music and the Skillfull Listener: American Women Compose the Natural World (Indiana University Press, 2013).
“Winning the Pauline Alderman Award is meaningful to me because it honors the lives and work of the nine composing women who were my subjects,” Dr. Von Glahn said. “Their collaborative approaches to creating music reflect their similarly collaborative understandings of humanity’s place in the larger natural world.”
Dr. Von Glahn joined the Florida State faculty in 1998 and was promoted to full professor in 2009. She is a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. Professor Von Glahn holds a master’s degree from Stony Brook University of the State University of New York System and a Ph.D. in music history from the University of Washington.
