Five Women Scholars Selected for Honors From National Associations

Elizabeth Belding, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, received the Harrold and Notkin Research and Graduate Mentoring Award from the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT). Professor Belding joined the faculty at the university in 2000 and was promoted to full professor in 2009.

Professor Belding is a summa cum laude graduate of Florida State University, where she double majored in computer science and applied mathematics. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Yolanda T. Moses, professor of anthropology and associate vice chancellor for diversity at the University of California, Riverside, has been selected to receive the 2015 Franz Boas Ward for Exemplary Service from the American Anthropological Association. Dr. Moses will be honored at the group’s annual meeting in Denver this November.

Dr. Moses joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside in 2003. She is the former president of the City College of New York. Professor Moses is a graduate of the California State University, San Bernardino and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Riverside.

Isis Carbajal de Garcia, senior general counsel at Florida International University in Miami, received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

A native of Cuba, Carbajal de Garcia holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Florida and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Elena T. Carbone, associate professor of nutrition at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been selected to receive the 2015 Mid-Career Award in Nutrition Education from the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior. She will be honored at the society’s annual conference on July 27 in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Carbone is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She holds a master’s degree from Boston University and a doctorate in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lynda Bonewald, the Lefkowitz Professor of Oral Biology and vice chancellor for translational and clinical research at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will receive the William F. Neuman Award, the oldest and most prestigious honor presented by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Dr. Bonewald will be honored at the society’s annual meeting in Seattle this October.

Dr. Bonewald also serves as the director of the university’s Center for Excellence in the Study of Dental and Musculoskeletal Tissues. She is a graduate of the University of Texas, where she majored in biology, and holds a Ph.D. in immunology and microbiology from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
