The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education has entered into an agreement with Princeton University in New Jersey to ensure the university’s compliance with Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 in regards to sexual harassment and sexual violence on campus. An investigation by the government found that Princeton was in violation of Title IX for failing to promptly and equitably respond to complaints of sexual violence, including sexual assault. It also ruled that the university failed to end a sexually hostile environment for one student.
The Department of Education also found that the policies and procedures in place at the time of the complaint to investigate and respond to assaults and violence did not comply with Title IX. However, the Department of Education noted that new policies and procedures implemented at Princeton earlier this fall correct many of the deficiencies identified in the investigation.
Princeton University agreed to take several steps including institution of education and prevention programs, the implementation of bystander intervention and public awareness campaigns, to conduct annual surveys on sexual assault, and to report on the university’s responses to all allegations of sexual assault and violence.
