Syracuse University Scholar Wins Book Award From the Gerontological Society of America

MadonnaHarringtonMeyerMeyerBookMadonna Harrington Meyer, the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and chair of the department of sociology at Syracuse University, has been selected to receive the Richard Kalish Award from the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Harrington Meyer will receive the award at the society’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., this November. The award recognizes “insightful and innovative publications on aging and life course development in the behavioral and social sciences.”

Professor Harrington Meyer is being honored for her book Grandmothers at Work: Juggling Families and Jobs (New York University Press, 2014). The book explores the stresses faced by working grandmothers who also have to provide care for their grandchildren.

Professor Harrington Meyer taught at the University of Illinois for six years before joining the faculty at Syracuse University in 1997. She was promoted to full professor in 2005. A graduate of Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, Professor Harrington Meyer earned a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in sociology from Florida State University.
