Report Documents a Significant Drop in Athletic Gender Hiring Performance at Colleges and Universities

UCF_LogoThe Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida has published its annual report card on diversity in college sports. Richard Lapchick, the director of TIDES and the primary author of the report said that this is the most distressing College Sport Racial and Gender Report Card in many years.” The reason for Professor Lapchick’s assessment is that the overall grade for gender hiring practices for colleges and universities dropped from 81.3 points to 75.9 points.

Among the highlights of the report regarding women in college sports are:

* All 11 conference commissioners for schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision are White men.

* Women held only 38.7 percent of all head coaching positions for women’s teams in the NCAA’s Division I. Women held 47.9 percent of the jobs as assistant coaches for women’s teams in Division I.

* Women were 8.6 percent of the athletics directors and 29.5 percent of the associate athletics directors at Division I schools.

* Women were 3.2 percent of the head coaches of all Division I men’s teams.

* Women were 12.6 percent of the sports information directors ar Division I colleges and universities.
