The Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine recently appointed two women as associate deans.
Julie Funk was named associate dean of professional academic programs and student affairs. Dr. Funk is an associate professor of pre-harvest food safety in the department of large animal clinical sciences. She also has served as director of the online master’s degree program in food safety. Dr. Funk has been on the faculty at Michigan State since 2006 and previously taught at Ohio State University.
Dr. Funk earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine at Michigan State University. She holds a Ph.D. in comparative biomedical sciences from the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University.
Vilma Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan was appointed associate dean for graduate studies and interim associate dean of research. For the past two years, she has chaired the research committee of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges.
Dr. Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Istanbul Medical School and completed postdoctoral studies in human genetics at the University of Michigan.
