In Memoriam: Martha Farmer, 1938-2026

Martha Farmer, former president of Augusta College in Georgia and what is now Castleton University in Vermont, passed away on May 13. She was 87 years old.

Born and raised in Roanoke, Alabama, Dr. Farmer was the first in her family to attend college. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from the University of Alabama and her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.

In 1966, Dr. Farmer was hired as a part-time instructor of business at Augusta College. By 1987, she had risen to the role of dean of the business school. Dr. Farmer was appointed acting president of Augusta College in 1991 and served in that capacity for two years.

After living in the South her entire life, Dr. Farmer went on to accept the role of president at what was at the time Castleton State College in rural Vermont. She led the college for six years before retiring and moving to Newman, Georgia.
