San Diego State University Settles Title IX Lawsuit Over Student-Athlete Scholarships

San Diego State University (SDSU) recently settled a lawsuit filed in 2022 by former women student-athletes over claims that the university did not provide equal scholarship money compared to male student-athletes, according to a report from USA Today Sports.

As part of the settlement, SDSU will pay $300,000 spilt among 798 former varsity female athletes who attended the university between the 2018–2019 and 2024–2025 academic years. In addition to issuing a $1.3 million payout to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, SDSU is also required to provide other benefits for its women athletes, including replacing the turf field for the women’s lacrosse team and offering equitable professional photography services and publicity to both men’s and women’s teams.

“These women have made history,” attorney Arthur Bryant told USA Today Sports. “This is the first case ever in which a school is going to pay damages to women athletes for depriving them of equal athletic financial aid. It is definitely not going to be the last. And SDSU is going to comply with Title IX.”
