Four New Deans at American Universities

guthmillerJanet Guthmiller was named dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She will begin her term as dean on September 1. Currently Dr. Guthmiller is associate dean for academic affairs and professor of periodontology at the School of Dentistry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She previously taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Maryland.

Dr. Guthmiller is a graduate of the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa and holds a Ph.D. in cellular and structural biology from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

lovellSharon Lovell is the new dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She has served as interim dean and previously was interim dean of the College of Integrated Science and Technology at the university.

Dr. Lovell is a graduate of James Madison University, where she majored in psychology. She holds a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

reedCynthia J. Reed was appointed dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights. Her appointment is effective on July 15. Currently, Dr. Reed is the Gerald S. Leischuck Endowed Professor of Educational Leadership at Auburn University in Alabama.

Dr. Reed holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the State University of New York at Oswego. She earned an educational doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh.

Advance Grant Group Photo With Chancellor CantorKarin Ruhlandt was named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University in New York, effective July 1. Since 2009 she has been chair of the department of chemistry at the university.

Dr. Ruhlandt is a native of Germany and holds a Ph.D. from Phillips-Universitat Marburg. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Davis.

Nicole Reaves has been serving as executive vice president and chief programs officer at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina. On July 15, she is slated to become the first woman president of Schenectady County Community College within the State University of New York System.
