Frances H. Arnold, the Dick and Barbara Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, has been chosen for induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held at the United States Patent and Trademark Office facility in Alexandria, Virginia on May 21.
Dr. Arnold, who also serves as the director of the Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center at CalTech, is being honored for her work to create biological catalysts for use in industrial processes, such as the production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources. Professor Arnold holds 39 U.S. patents. She is one only a few individuals who have been elected to all three branches of the National Academies.
Dr. Arnold is a graduate of Princeton University, where she majored in mechanical and aerospace engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
