Awards Given to Five Women Academics

BellLeeAnnLee Anne Bell, the Barbara Silver Horowitz Director of Education at Barnard College in New York City, received the 2013 Multicultural Media Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education. Professor Bell was honored for her documentary film, 40 Years Later: Now Can We Talk? The film explores the impact of racial integration in the Mississippi Delta.

Professor Bell has been on the faculty at Barnard College since 2002. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and an educational doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

LeslieEdgarLeslie Edgar, an associate professor of agriculture communications at the University of Arkansas, received the Excellence in College and University Teaching Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.

Dr. Edgar holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in agricultural systems, technology, and education from Utah State University. She earned a doctorate in agricultural leadership, education, and communications from Texas A&M University.

pshortPaula Myrick Short, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Houston, received the Master Professor Award from the University Council for Educational Administration. Dr. Short was named provost this past summer. Prior to coming to the University of Houston in 2012, Dr. Short served for more than 10 years as vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Tennessee Board of Regents.

From 1993 to 1999. Dr. Short served as editor of the Journal of School Leadership. She currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Women in Educational Leadership. Dr. Short holds a doctorate in administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

DELANY_Janet_webJanet DeLany, dean of graduate studies at Towson University in Maryland, has been selected to receive the 2014 Outstanding Mentor Award from the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Dr. DeLany has been on the faculty at Towson since 2002 and became a full professor in 2008. She previously taught at Penn State.

Allen-MarilouMarilou Allen, director of the Women’s Center at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, received the Founders Award from the National Women’s Studies Association. Allen has served as director of the Women’s Center at Haverford since it was founded in 1982.

Allen grew up across the street from Haverford College and her first job on campus was cleaning the homes of faculty members.
