Seven Women Academics Honored With Prestigious Awards

akilHuda Akil, professor of neuroscience at the University of Michigan medical school, was the recipient of the Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Akil’s research focuses on mood, emotions, and addiction.

Dr. Akil holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the American University of Beirut. She earned a Ph.D. in biological psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles.

allardSuzie Allard, an associate professor and director of the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, received the 2013 Library Journal Teaching Award. The award is given to an educator who has made outstanding contributions in training the next generation of librarians.

Dr. Allard is a graduate of California State University and holds a master of library sciences degree and a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Kentucky.

CarjuzaaJionna Carjuzaa, an associate professor of multicultural education at Montana State University, received the G. Pritchy Smith Multicultural Educator of the Year Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education. Dr. Carjuzaa has been on the faculty at Montana State University since 2006. Previously, she served on the faculty at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.

Dr. Carjuzaa holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, all from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Dr. Chisholm-BurnsMarie Chisholm-Burns, dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, received the 2013 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation. The award honors important contributions of published works in the biomedical field.

Dr. Chisholm-Burns has been dean of the College of Pharmacy at the UTHSC since 2011. Previously, she was a professor and chair of the department of pharmacy practice and science at the University of Arizona. Dr. Chisholm-Burns is a graduate of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, where she majored in biology and psychology. She holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Georgia and a master of public health degree from Emory University in Atlanta.

hernandezrl-rlMaria Hernandez-Reif, professor of human development and family studies and director of the Pediatric Development Research Laboratory at the University of Alabama, received the Ashley Montagu Award for research in massage therapy from the Canadian Touch Research Center. The award honors “a distinguished world personality who brilliantly excels at his or her work and whose devotion leads to the advancement of touch in the world.”

Dr. Hernandez-Reif joined the faculty at the University of Alabama in 2006, after teaching at the University of Miami. She is a graduate of St. Thomas College in Miami and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from Florida International University.

hoferAdriana Hofer, an assistant professor in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, received the Bernard J. LaLonde Award at the annual meeting of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals in Denver. Dr. Hofer was honored for the best paper published in the Journal of Business Logistics.

Dr. Hofer has been on the faculty at the University of Arkansas since 2008. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering in Brazil and a Ph.D. in business logistics from the University of Maryland at College Park.

School of Education HeadshotsAmanda Jansen, associate professor in the School of Education of the University of Delaware, was chosen to receive the 2014 Early Career Award from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. She will receive the award at the group’s annual convention in Irvine, California, in February.

Dr. Jansen is the co-author of Motivation Matters and Interest Counts: Fostering Engagement in Mathematics (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2011). She is a graduate of the University of Arizona and holds a doctorate in educational psychology from Michigan State University.
