Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bagHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

StJohnMount Holyoke College, a liberal arts educational institution for women in South Hadley, Massachusetts, received a five-year $411,531 grant from the National Science Foundation for research on developing robots for search and rescue missions in areas that are too dangerous for humans. The grant will support the research of Audrey St. John, the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Mount Holyoke and allow her to hire two assistant each summer to help in her research.

Dr. St. John is a summa cum laude graduate of Wellesley College. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The Office of Violence Against Women at the U.S. Department of Justice has issued a three-year, $500,000 grant for the Resources, Intervention, Services and Education (RISE) project operated by North Carolina A&T State University, Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The grant will focus on efforts to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault on the three campuses. The grant will also fund victim services programs and education initiatives for safety and prevention.
