Awards Bestowed on Six Women Professors

judy-grahnJudy Grahn, professor and co-director of the master’s degree program in women’s spirituality at Sofia University in Palo Alto, California, has been selected to receive a 2013 American Book Award. Professor Grahn is being honored for her book A Simple Revolution: The Making of an Activist Poet, a memoir about her life growing up in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Dr. Grahn is a graduate of San Francisco State University. She earned a Ph.D. at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.

kiernerCynthia Kierner professor of history at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, is the recipient of the Richard Slatten Award from the Virginia Historical Society. Professor Kierner was honored for her book Martha Jefferson Randolph, Daughter of Monticello: Her Life and Time (University of North Carolina Press, 2012).

Professor Kierner is the author of seven previous books. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

maret-traber-webMaret Traber, the Helen P. Rumbel Professor for Micronutrient Research in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University in Corvallis, received the DMS Nutritional Science Award fat the IUNS 20th International Congress of Nutrition in Granada, Spain. She was honored for her work on vitamin E.

Dr. Traber holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley.

beckmannSybilla Beckmann, the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, has been selected to receive the Louise Hay Award from the Association for Women in Mathematics. She will receive the award in January.

Professor Beckmann is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Torney-Purta for University of ChicagoJudith Torney-Purta, a professor of human development and quantitative methodology at the University of Maryland, was chosen as the winner of the 2013 Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career in Research Award. The award will be presented by the National Council for the Social Studies at its annual conference in St. Louis this November.

Dr. Torney-Purta is a graduate of Stanford University, where she majored in psychology. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in human development from the University of Chicago.

Morawski-smallThe Society for the History of Psychology of the American Psychological Association has presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Jill G. Morawski, the Wilbur Fisk Osborne Professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Dr. Morawski is also a professor of feminist, gender, and sexuality studies at Wesleyan.

Professor Morawski is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree from Wesleyan University and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
