A Quartet of Women Who Will Serve as Deans

diez-roux-webAna Diez Roux was chosen as the next dean of the School of Public Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She will take on her role as dean in February. Currently, she is chair of the department of epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. She previously taught at Columbia University.

Dr. Diez Roux earned her medical degree at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Michele-BaptisteMichele Baptiste was named dean of diversity, compliance, and faculty relations at City College of New York. She was an affirmative action officer and Title IX coordinator at the State University of New York at Purchase.

Baptiste is a graduate of Boston University in Massachusetts and the Albany Law School of Union University.

Gilda_Barabino-head-shotGilda Barabino has been selected as the dean of the Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York. Dr. Barabino was associate chair for graduate studies and professor of biomedical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 2008 and 2009, she served as vice provost for academic diversity at Georgia Tech. Before she joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2007, she had an 18-year career on the faculty at Northeastern University in Boston. There she was a professor of chemical engineering and vice provost for undergraduate education.

Professor Barabino is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and holds a Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston.

Wood-Sharon-2013_14879-v-small-200x300Sharon L. Wood was appointed interim dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a professor in the department of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering at the university. She will be the first woman to serve as dean and is the first woman to serve as a department chair at the school. Dr. Wood joined the faculty at the University of Texas in 1996 after 10 years on the faculty at the University of Illinois.

Professor Wood is a graduate of the University of Virginia. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois.
