Medical Schools With the Highest and Lowest Percentages of Women Graduates

medicalAccording to the Association of American Medical Colleges, in 2011, a record 8,397 women graduated from U.S. medical schools. Women were 48.4 percent of all medical school graduates.

Of the 127 medical schools surveyed by the AAMC in 2011, women were a majority of the graduating class at 57 schools. There were four medical schools in the United States where women were more than 60 percent of the graduating class: George Washington University, the University of Arizona, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Meharry Medical College. Both Morehouse and Meharry are historically Black institutions.

At the University of North Dakota, the University of Utah, and the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, in 2011 women were less than one third of all graduates. There were 11 other medical schools where women were less than 40 percent of the graduating class. They were the University of Alabama, the University of Arkansas, the University of California Los Angeles, Mercer University, the University of Kentucky, Uniformed Services University in Maryland, Saint Louis University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Oklahoma, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Texas Tech University.
