Elizabeth Chilton has been appointed the twenty-first president of the University of New Hampshire.
The University of New Hampshire enrolls roughly 11,500 undergraduate students and 2,500 graduate students. Women represent about 56 percent of the undergraduate student population.
Dr. Chilton has been serving as provost and executive vice president of the Washington State University system, and the inaugural chancellor of the system’s flagship campus in Pullman. Prior to her current role, she served as dean of the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York System. Earlier in her career, she served as a professor, chair of the department of anthropology, and associate vice chancellor for research and engagement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In addition to her leadership and administrative positions, Dr. Chilton has an extensive academic background in anthropology. Throughout her career, she has conducted research on the precolonial archaeology of Northeast North America, paleoecology, cultural resource management, heritage studies, and materials science.
Dr. Chilton is a graduate of the State University of New York System, having earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University at Albany. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
