Report Documents the Employment Shortfall of Women in the Tech Workforce

A new report from the Computing Technology Industry Association offers a wealth of data on employment in the technology sector. Tech employment in the United States reached an estimated 12,159,552 workers in 2020. Some of the data included in the report on employment in technology jobs is broken down by gender.

Nationally, women represent approximately 49 percent of the U.S. workforce but only 26 percent of the workforce in tech occupations. This gap signals underrepresentation in the tech workforce. Women make up 30 percent of tech workers in Mississippi, the highest level in any state. In Utah, women are 21 percent of all tech workers, the lowest level in the United States.

Women make up 30 percent or more of the tech workforce in Memphis and Charleston, the highest percentages of any cities included in the survey. In the San Jose, California, metropolitan area – the home of Silicon Valley – women make up only 21 percent of tech workers. This is the lowest rate of any metropolitan area surveyed for the report.

Women make up 46 percent of all data scientists. This is the occupation with the greatest percentage of women workers in the technology sector. Women are more than a third of all system analysis and engineers, database administrations and architects, and web developers and digital interface designers. In all other occupations, women make up less than 30 percent of all tech workers. Women are only 15 percent of computer hardware engineers, 14 percent of network architects, and 10 percent of computer, ATM, and office machine repair workers.
