In Memoriam: Judith Cohen Saffran, 1923-2020

Judith Saffran, a long-time medical research at the University of Toledo, died in Queens, New York, on January 14. She was 96 years old.

Dr. Saffran was a native of Montreal, Canada. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at McGill University in Montreal. There she met her husband Murray, a fellow Ph.D. student at McGill.

In 1969, the couple moved to Toledo, Ohio, when Murray was named chair of the biochemistry department at what is now the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. Judith worked first at The Toledo Hospital Institute of Medical Research. She moved over to two successive roles at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. During that time of her career, Judith was part of a research team investigating the binding of hormones to cell protein.

Dr. Saffran retired from the University of Toledo in 1997.
